Give to Gain: The Power of Passing It On
Early in my career, I got lucky.
I was mentored by my boss — a woman who embodied the kind of leadership I hadn’t yet seen up close. She was confident and strong, without being apologetic. Decisive, with sharp judgment. Persistent in the face of challenge. She cared deeply about her people and led with strength and steadiness.
But what shaped me most wasn’t just how she led.
It was how generously she gave of her time, her knowledge & experience to those of us she led. She advocated, supported, and encouraged us in our own leadership journeys. She pulled back the curtain on what leadership really required so that we were prepared when it was our turn.
And she did it especially for other women — women like me who were quietly inspired to lead but weren’t always sure we belonged there.
Her mentorship made such an impact on me, on my growth as a leader and my understanding of what a meaningful, well-lived life looks like. I experienced, in a profound way, the power of support that passes from woman to woman.
That’s why this year’s International Women’s Day theme — Give to Gain — resonates so deeply with me.
When we give, we all gain.
What I’ve learned is this: when someone invests in your growth, it changes how you show up — and how you invest in others. I’ve seen how the impact doesn’t stop with one relationship. It ripples outward, shaping teams, cultures, and careers.
And mentorship isn’t a one-way exchange.
Of course, I’ve watched mentees gain confidence, clarity, and capability. But I’ve grown, too. Each conversation invites me to reflect on my own leadership journey. New perspectives sharpen my thinking. Their questions challenge my assumptions. I’m reminded of what I’ve learned — and what I’m still learning.
When I give in this way, I’m changed by it.
And that’s what makes this year’s International Women’s Day feel so meaningful to me — an opportunity to intentionally practice the kind of leadership that grows all of us.
I’m hosting three different events in honor of the day, each designed to spark meaningful reflection and action. Choose the one that speaks to you - or join more than one - and step into conversations that will expand how you lead.
I’d love to see you there.
