What’s Really Driving Your Decisions?

This week, we’re diving into #3 of the 5 Foundational Blocks. If you’ve been following along, you know these blocks are the core elements that keep you grounded no matter what shifts around you. Last week we explored Strengths, and this week it’s all about Motivators - understanding what drives you as a leader.

Leaders make hundreds of decisions every week - but how often do we stop and ask why we’re making them?

What happens when we do stop and ask why? Let me tell you a story.

A new manager I coached wanted to implement a new policy to address a team issue. One of her team members had been taking extended lunch breaks without returning promptly. She felt this needed a policy “to back her up.”

When I asked how she had addressed the situation directly with the team member, she admitted she hadn’t. The discomfort she felt about having the conversation was driving her decision, not the needs of her team.

Once we dug into her motivators, it became clear: she was letting fear and discomfort guide her choices instead of her values as a leader. With that awareness, she was able to have a productive conversation with the team member - no new policy required.

The takeaway: Your motivators shape your decisions and your team’s experience. Checking in with yourself keeps you leading from your authentic voice.

3 quick questions to uncover your motivators:
1️⃣ Why do you want to make this choice?
2️⃣ Why does that matter?
3️⃣ Why that, instead of something else?

Say it out loud to a peer, manager, or coach—it helps separate your authentic voice from your inner critic.

Lead from what truly drives you.

“A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.”
